This is an estimate. Average reading speed varies widely with content difficulty and the individual reader. Speaking time is calculated at roughly half the reading speed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a reading speed?

The slider counts characters per minute (spaces excluded), tuned for Korean text at around 300–400 per minute, so English text comes out slow. For English, divide the word count shown below by your words per minute (roughly 200–250 for light reading, 100–130 for dense technical writing).

Can I use this to time a presentation?

Yes. Speaking time is calculated at a slower pace than silent reading (roughly half the reading speed), which works well for estimating how long a script or narration will run.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Counting and calculation happen entirely in your browser.

What this tool does

Paste text or type a character count, and it calculates how long the text takes to read silently and to read aloud (for a talk or narration) in minutes and seconds, along with the character count without spaces and the word count. Use it to show 'N min read' on a blog post, fit a presentation or speech script to a time limit, or size a video script or narration.

How it is calculated

Reading time = characters without spaces ÷ reading speed per minute. The slider sets 150–600 characters per minute in steps of 10, defaulting to 350, a pace tuned for Korean text. Speaking time assumes you read the same text aloud at half the reading speed. With the count field's default of 3,000 characters at 350 per minute: 3,000 ÷ 350 ≈ 8.57 minutes, shown as 8 m 34 s, and speaking at 175 per minute takes 17 m 9 s. Results are rounded to the second, and anything under a minute shows seconds only. All whitespace, including spaces and line breaks, is excluded from the count; punctuation and digits are included. Words are space-separated chunks in paste mode and estimated as characters ÷ 5 in count mode.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

Why is speaking time double the reading time?

Reading aloud is clearly slower than scanning with your eyes, so the speaking pace is set at half the reading speed. If you talk fast or slow, adjust the slider to match.

Why are spaces excluded from the count?

Spaces take no time to read. All spaces and line breaks are removed; letters, digits and punctuation each count as one character.

How long should a 5-minute script be?

At the default 350 per minute the speaking pace is 175, so about 875 characters for five minutes. Changing the slider to your speaking pace changes this too.

Is the pasted text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Counting and calculation happen entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The text disappears when you close the page.
